Have You Had Issues With Dog's Paw Pads?

In my almost 30 years of doing this with multiple generations of huskies I had one husky that would occasionally wear his pads more then others and they would peel and get a bit raw underneath.  Fortunately they healed quickly usually within a few days. This was from his awkward gait (stride) the way he would run especially when we would run on asphalt so I would booty him accordingly. Also sometimes the really cold asphalt had that effect on his pads as well. I try to vary the surfaces we run but will definitely hit some asphalt as it gives them the opportunity to build and maintain callus which toughens the pads to make them less injury prone like the condition you mention raw pads. Depending on the surface and conditions I will sometimes use booties or wax as I mentioned. I try to avoid over using booties as they can create other problems like slipping as they don’t let the dogs fully grip and exercise with their toes and claws. That being said I have a range of booties which offer me different options depending on dog and surface:) I also have used booties when I had radiation treatments for a dog who had a cancer growth removed on his paw. Booties made it possible for him to still exercise after he recovered from his radiation treatments as they protected his paws because the fur wouldn’t grow back.

Do I Use Booties?

I use booties and waxes when conditions warrant, but usually sparingly because it’s important to keep the callus on their pads healthy to keep them less injury prone. Also proper asphalt use can help maintain healthy claw and nail management. I’ve actually had issues with booties as they can inhibit them (as the dogs have less contact with the ground and can’t use their toes or claws to grip the surface) so they’ve caused some of my dogs to slip.  Additionally sometimes they can create awkward movements and gaits. So again depending on the situation when I use booties I have a range I choose from accordingly. Also It’s important to learn the way a particular dog runs and understand if there are issues causing abnormal or unnecessary pad ware that may be dog not surface dependent and then address accordingly.
